AI-Based Visual Defect Detection and Quality Assessment for Industrial Production

Overview

This service provides advanced machine-vision solutions for automated defect identification and quality assessment in industrial production lines. One possible application is the detection of rotten, contaminated, damaged, or visually impure objects, such as vegetables and fruits before packaging. Going beyond traditional rule-based image processing and standard statistical approaches, the service uses supervised deep-learning computer-vision models to identify defects with high speed and accuracy. The service is designed primarily for image-like sensory data, including RGB images, hyperspectral images, thermal images, or other camera-based inspection data collected during production. The service helps bridge the gap between research-level machine-vision methods and real industrial deployment. It enables companies to automate inspection tasks that are traditionally performed manually or with slower conventional image-analysis pipelines. In the context of food and agricultural production, this can support automatic rejection of rotten or impure produce before packaging, improving product quality, reducing labor costs, increasing throughput, and minimizing waste. The service is based on fully supervised deep-learning computer-vision models, especially a modified version of the original U-Net algorithm that can handle multi-channel input (of shape: height, width, channel), trained on labeled examples in a supervised manner. The framework can be applied to standard optical camera data as well as more advanced sensory imaging, depending on customer needs and production-line hardware.

Outcome

Depending on the customer's target goals, outputs may include classification scores for product quality, predicted boundaries around impurities, and automatic accept/reject decision support for production-line integration.

Service typeModel/Algorithms
OutputsFine-tuned model for training; per-pixel probability score for particular task plus feature classification score for inference.
RequirementsRequires a workstation with an NVIDIA GPU node (with at least 8GB RAM, RTX-30 or higher). For training: sufficient number of annotated training images prepared for segmentation task (i.e., per-image and per-pixel annotation) and prepared within the TensorFlow framework.
LimitationsPerformance depends strongly on the quality, quantity, and diversity of annotated training data. Changes in illumination, camera setup, conveyor speed, and produce variety may affect results.
