Exploration and Investigation of Disaster Events through the Slovenian EO Data Cube

Overview

This service provides on-demand access to a semantically enriched, multi-modal Earth Observation data cube covering Slovenia, purpose-built for exploring and investigating disaster events such as forest fires, floods, ice storms, landslides, and mining-related subsidence. Users can query the data cube by specifying a geographic area of interest, a time range, and desired sensor modalities, and receive analysis-ready, spatially aligned datasets combining optical (Sentinel-2, Landsat), radar (Sentinel-1), atmospheric (Sentinel-5P), and national lidar data. The service dramatically reduces the time from event occurrence to data-driven investigation by eliminating manual data discovery, downloading, and preprocessing steps. The service builds on the Open Data Cube (ODC) framework with PostgreSQL-backed indexing and cloud-optimised GeoTIFF storage. Data is exposed through STAC catalogues, openEO APIs, and OGC services. A semantic metadata layer based on the W3C RDF Data Cube vocabulary (QB), GeoSPARQL, and OWL-Time enables intelligent querying. Standardised ARD processing pipelines include atmospheric correction (Sen2Cor), cloud masking (Fmask/s2cloudless), radiometric terrain correction for SAR (SNAP), and geometric co-registration. Derived indices (NDVI, NDWI, EVI) are computed on-the-fly.

Outcome

Users receive co-registered, harmonised, AI-ready multi-modal datasets tailored to their specified disaster event, area, time range, and resolution. Outputs are packaged as training-ready patches with standardised metadata and persistent identifiers, suitable for direct use in AI/ML workflows or traditional remote sensing analysis. The service enables rapid situational awareness and supports post-event damage assessment, recovery monitoring, and long-term landscape change analysis.
